Soil organic carbon: Definition

Updated · 1 min read · By the akar.earth specialist team

What is soil organic carbon (SOC)? Definition, how SOC stocks are sampled and calculated, and how agroforestry and peat projects in Indonesia use it.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is the carbon held in soil organic matter, the decomposed remains of plants, roots, microbes and animals. It is one of the five IPCC carbon pools and, globally, soils hold more carbon than vegetation.

Why it matters

Land use changes SOC. Clearing, tillage and drainage release it; trees, cover crops and reduced disturbance can build it slowly. For agricultural land management and agroforestry projects, SOC can be a main source of credits. For peat and mangrove projects, protecting soil carbon is the whole point.

How it is measured

SOC stock to a fixed depth is calculated as:

SOC (t C/ha) = carbon concentration (%) × bulk density (g/cm³) × depth (cm), adjusted for coarse fragments.

Teams take soil cores at stratified sample points, measure bulk density, and analyse carbon in a lab, usually by dry combustion. Changes are detected by re-sampling the same points years later, or modelled with calibrated soil models. Because SOC varies widely over short distances and changes slowly, sample sizes must be large. See our guide to soil carbon for smallholders and the Gold Standard SOC framework.

Indonesia angle

Indonesian soils span highly weathered mineral soils with modest SOC, volcanic soils (Andosols) with high SOC in Java and Sumatra highlands, and deep tropical peatland where carbon is measured in metres of organic soil. Coffee and cocoa agroforestry on mineral soils can increase SOC, but credits are usually smaller and slower than biomass gains.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing SOC concentrations without bulk density, which hides compaction effects.
  • Sampling to different depths at baseline and monitoring.
  • Treating peat as ordinary SOC with a 30 cm depth; peat needs full-depth measurement.
  • Ignoring SOC losses from land preparation in ARR projects.

Frequently asked questions

How is soil organic carbon stock calculated?

SOC stock (t C/ha) = carbon concentration × bulk density × sampling depth, with a correction for stones and gravel. Results are reported to a fixed depth, often 30 cm.

Can smallholder agroforestry earn credits for soil carbon?

Some methodologies allow it, but SOC changes slowly and varies a lot between points, so sampling costs and uncertainty deductions are high.
