Comparisons
Carbon standard comparisons and more: side-by-side tables on Verra vs Gold Standard, ARR vs REDD+, Article 6.2 vs 6.4, EUDR vs RSPO and monitoring technologies.
Our comparison pages put two options side by side, such as two carbon standards, two project types or two monitoring technologies, and say when each one fits. Every page includes a table, then explains the trade-offs for projects and supply chains in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
Use this section when you already know the options and need to choose.
How to read a comparison
Each comparison follows the same pattern:
- A direct answer: which option suits which situation.
- A table comparing scope, requirements, cost drivers, buyer perception and Indonesian fit.
- The differences that actually change decisions.
- Links to the full pages on each option.
We do not declare winners where none exist. A choice that suits a large REDD+ concession can be wrong for a group of coffee farmers.
Standards and methodologies
- Verra vs Gold Standard for land projects: reach and track record vs sustainable development emphasis.
- Verra vs Plan Vivo for community projects: scale vs community governance.
- VM0047 vs AR-ACM0003: the current Verra ARR method vs the older CDM approach.
- VM0048 vs VM0007: what changed in REDD+ baselines.
- ART TREES vs Verra JNR: the two jurisdictional REDD+ frameworks.
Whichever standard you choose, remember that the ICVCM CCP label needs two ticks: a CCP-Approved methodology used under a CCP-Eligible program.
Project types
- ARR vs REDD+: removals from planting vs avoided emissions from protection.
- Project-level vs jurisdictional REDD+.
- Mangrove vs terrestrial forest carbon.
- Agroforestry vs monoculture plantation carbon.
Markets, finance and policy
- Article 6.2 vs Article 6.4.
- Carbon credits vs insetting.
- Biodiversity credits vs carbon credits.
- IDXCarbon vs international registries and SRUK vs the Verra registry.
EUDR and supply chains
- EUDR vs RSPO, EUDR vs ISPO and EUDR vs CSDDD: how existing certification and due diligence rules relate to the EUDR.
Monitoring technology
- Field plots vs remote sensing for carbon stock.
- Sentinel-2 vs PlanetScope imagery.
- Lidar vs photogrammetry for forest structure.
Comparisons by reader
Developers usually start with the standards and project type comparisons. Buyers start with ARR vs REDD+, credits vs insetting and the standards pages. Exporters start with the EUDR comparisons.
When a comparison is not enough
Some decisions depend on site data that no general table can capture: how much forest was lost on your land, which species survive there, which buyers you can reach and which Indonesian approvals apply. In those cases, use the comparison to frame the question, then test both options against your own land, supply chain and buyer requirements. Many projects also combine options, for example ARR on degraded land next to protected forest, or a Verra registration with a CCB label for community benefits.
Next steps
Comparisons help you narrow the choice. To go deeper, open the standards hub, the forest carbon hub or the guides. If you need a decision for a specific site or supply chain, our feasibility and land eligibility service tests the options against your data. All comparison pages are listed below.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Verra or Gold Standard?
Neither is better in general. Verra's VCS has the larger nature-based track record and buyer reach; Gold Standard puts more weight on sustainable development outcomes. The right choice depends on project type, scale and buyers.
Is Plan Vivo a good choice for community projects?
Often, yes. Plan Vivo was built for community and smallholder projects and sets strong requirements on governance, safeguards and local participation. It runs PV Climate for carbon and PV Nature for biodiversity.
Does RSPO certification satisfy the EUDR?
Not on its own. RSPO helps with some evidence, but the EUDR requires plot-level geolocation, a 31 December 2020 cut-off and a due diligence statement, and it does not accept mass balance.
