Verra vs Gold Standard for Land Projects

Updated · 4 min read · By the akar.earth specialist team

Verra vs Gold Standard for land projects in Indonesia: scope, methodologies, SDG rules, buyer perception and when each program fits ARR or REDD+.

Choose Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) when your Indonesian land project is REDD+, peat or large-scale ARR and you want the deepest market and the methodology most buyers already know. Choose Gold Standard when the project is afforestation, reforestation or agroforestry with strong, measurable community and SDG outcomes, and your buyers specifically pay for that. Both are CCP-Eligible programs, so methodology choice and data quality decide credit integrity more than the logo.

Key differences

Scope. Verra covers almost every land category, including avoided deforestation and peat. Gold Standard has never certified project-level REDD+, so any project whose main climate benefit is avoided emissions from forest loss has only Verra (or a jurisdictional route such as ART TREES) among the major programs. For Indonesia this is decisive: REDD+ drives most of the country’s issuance. Southeast Asia issued 129 million NbS credits under VCS and Gold Standard to April 2025, with Indonesia contributing 59.3% of regional issuance, mostly REDD+.

Methodology approach for ARR. Verra’s VM0047 v1.1, effective for all projects since 14 May 2025, offers an area-based approach (remote sensing, a dynamic performance benchmark from control plots, and plot sampling) and a census-based approach for smaller plantings. Gold Standard uses its own A/R requirements, described on Gold Standard A/R requirements. The two differ in how they test additionality and set baselines. Check the current version on each program’s website before you design sampling.

Sustainable development. Gold Standard requires projects to show contributions to SDGs beyond climate, with monitoring. Verra treats this as optional, typically delivered through CCB Standards or SD VISta labels. If your buyers want co-benefit claims, both routes work; Gold Standard bakes it in.

Market depth. The Verra VCS Program dominates Southeast Asian NbS supply. That means more comparable transactions, more rating coverage and more buyers who know the paperwork. Gold Standard land credits from Indonesia are rarer, which can help differentiation but makes price discovery harder.

When each fits in Indonesia and Southeast Asia

  • REDD+ on peat or mineral soils in Kalimantan, Sumatra or Papua: Verra, and consider how the project nests with provincial or national accounting (see project vs jurisdictional REDD+).
  • Large ARR on degraded land or ex-concession areas: usually Verra with VM0047, because remote-sensing benchmarks scale well over large, stratified areas.
  • Smallholder agroforestry or community woodlots in Java, Sulawesi or Nusa Tenggara: Gold Standard is a real option when SDG outcomes such as income and food security can be measured. Plan Vivo is another (see Verra vs Plan Vivo).
  • Mangrove reforestation: both programs have pathways; compare methodology fit carefully.

Whichever program you choose, Indonesian projects must also follow domestic rules: Perpres 110/2025, Permenhut 6/2026 for forestry carbon, and SRUK recording if units are to be traded on IDXCarbon. A program choice does not replace domestic authorisation.

Cost and effort considerations

We do not publish fee estimates because both programs revise fee schedules (Verra issued Program Fee Schedule v1.2 in September 2026). The drivers to compare are:

  • Registration and issuance levies per credit, which differ in structure between programs.
  • Validation and verification body (VVB) availability in Indonesia and the region, which affects audit cost and scheduling.
  • Extra monitoring: Gold Standard’s SDG monitoring adds survey and reporting work; Verra plus CCB adds similar work if you choose the label.
  • Field data. Both programs need plot-level evidence. Good field data campaigns cut verification risk more than any program choice.

Common misconceptions

  • “Gold Standard credits are always higher quality.” Quality depends on methodology, baseline and monitoring. Both programs are CCP-Eligible; the CCP label also needs a CCP-Approved methodology (“two ticks”).
  • “Verra means REDD+ controversy.” Verra’s newer REDD+ methodology VM0048 moved baseline-setting toward jurisdictional allocation partly to answer past criticism. ARR under VCS is a different risk profile.
  • “You can switch programs later.” Switching after validation usually means re-validation and possible loss of vintages. Decide early, ideally during feasibility and eligibility work.
  • “Program choice settles domestic compliance.” It does not. Indonesian law sets separate registration, ownership and benefit-sharing rules.

Frequently asked questions

Does Gold Standard certify REDD+ projects?

Gold Standard does not offer a REDD+ (avoided deforestation) pathway for project developers. Its land-use work centres on afforestation and reforestation, agriculture and soil carbon. Indonesian REDD+ projects almost always use Verra's VCS.

Are Verra and Gold Standard both CCP-Eligible?

Yes. ICVCM has assessed both as CCP-Eligible programs. A credit only gets the CCP label if the specific methodology used is also CCP-Approved, so check the methodology as well as the program.

Which program do buyers prefer for tree-planting credits?

It depends on the buyer. Some corporate buyers value Gold Standard's mandatory SDG accounting; others prefer Verra for its larger market depth and familiarity. Ratings and methodology quality often matter more than the program logo.

Can an Indonesian land project sell VCS or Gold Standard credits domestically?

Domestic exchange trading requires units recorded in SRUK and recognised under Indonesian rules. International program credits do not automatically qualify, so plan the domestic and international routes early.
