Gold Standard A/R Activity Requirements

Updated · 3 min read · By the akar.earth specialist team

Gold Standard afforestation requirements explained: land-use rules, safeguards, SDG impacts, buffers and planned credits, with an Indonesian lens.

Gold Standard’s afforestation and reforestation (A/R) requirements sit within its Gold Standard for the Global Goals (GS4GG) framework. An A/R project must meet the Land Use and Forests activity requirements, apply an approved A/R methodology, pass safeguarding and stakeholder consultation rules, and show measurable contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals as well as carbon removals.

Compared with Verra, Gold Standard puts more weight on sustainable development outcomes and community consultation. Read Verra vs Gold Standard for a side-by-side view, and Gold Standard for the programme overview.

What the requirements cover

The A/R rules combine programme-wide GS4GG requirements with land-use specific ones:

  • Eligibility. Land must not have been forest in a recent reference period, and the project must not cause deforestation. Check the current look-back period in the activity requirements.
  • Safeguarding principles. Human rights, labour, gender, cultural heritage, land tenure, biodiversity and ecosystem protection.
  • Stakeholder consultation. A local stakeholder consultation before design is finalised, and a feedback round before certification, with records of how input was handled.
  • SDG impacts. Climate action plus other SDG contributions, each with indicators and monitoring.
  • Ecological requirements. Rules on species selection, invasive species, monocultures, water and soil.
  • Risk and buffer. Contributions to Gold Standard buffer arrangements to cover reversal risk and uncertainty.
  • Methodology. An approved A/R methodology for quantifying removals. Gold Standard also lists a mangrove reforestation methodology for removals.

Check the current versions on the Gold Standard documents site before drafting.

How Gold Standard A/R certification works step by step

  1. Preliminary review. Submit project information to Gold Standard for an early check.
  2. Local stakeholder consultation. Hold meetings with affected communities and record feedback.
  3. Design certification. Prepare the project design document with methodology, safeguards, SDG impacts and monitoring plan. A VVB validates it.
  4. Planned Emission Reductions. Gold Standard can issue PERs, forward units based on expected removals, for land-use projects. They are not verified removals.
  5. Implementation and monitoring. Plant, maintain and monitor trees, safeguards and SDG indicators.
  6. Performance certification. A VVB verifies actual removals and SDG outcomes. PERs convert to verified units as removals are confirmed.
  7. Renewal. Crediting periods are renewed under the rules in force at the time.

Indonesia and Southeast Asia application

Southeast Asia issued 129 million nature-based credits under VCS and Gold Standard to April 2025, mostly REDD+. Gold Standard’s land-use pipeline in the region is smaller than Verra’s, but its focus on community benefits fits Indonesian smallholder and social forestry models.

Practical points:

  • Species choice. Mixed native species and agroforestry systems sit more comfortably with Gold Standard’s ecological rules than large single-species timber plantations. Read species selection for ARR.
  • Consultation is substantive. Village-level meetings in the local language, inclusion of women and marginalised groups, and grievance mechanisms. Read community engagement.
  • Tenure. Social forestry permits, customary forest recognition and private land titles each need different evidence. Permenhut 6/2026 names social forestry, customary forests and communities as legitimate participants in forestry carbon trading.
  • National rules. Perpres 110/2025 and SRUK apply in addition to Gold Standard rules where units enter the domestic system.
  • Article 6. Gold Standard has aligned parts of its framework with the Paris Agreement and works on Article 6 reporting. Read authorisation letters.

Pitfalls verifiers flag

  • Consultation records that do not show how feedback changed the design.
  • SDG claims without monitored indicators.
  • Exotic species without justification or invasive risk assessment.
  • Land eligibility evidence missing for the full look-back period.
  • PERs sold as if they were verified removals.

Design choices that ease certification

Plan mixed species with a clear share of native trees, map riparian and high conservation value areas to keep them intact, set up a grievance mechanism before planting, and choose SDG indicators you can actually measure every year. These choices reduce findings at design certification.

Monitoring beyond carbon

Gold Standard A/R projects monitor more than trees. Expect to track SDG indicators, safeguard compliance, stakeholder grievances and ecological conditions. Build these into the same field visits that measure plots. A single data system for carbon and SDG indicators keeps costs down and makes performance certification smoother.

Integrity status

ICVCM lists Gold Standard as a CCP-Eligible programme. A CCP label needs the second tick too: a CCP-Approved methodology. Check the ICVCM status table for which Gold Standard land-use methodologies hold approval. Read ICVCM Core Carbon Principles.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Gold Standard requirements for afforestation and reforestation?

A/R projects under Gold Standard for the Global Goals must meet the Land Use and Forests activity requirements, apply an approved A/R methodology, follow safeguarding principles, run stakeholder consultation, and show contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals alongside carbon removals.

What are PERs in Gold Standard A/R?

Planned Emission Reductions are forward-looking units Gold Standard can issue for land-use projects based on expected removals. They convert to verified units only after the removals are verified. Check current rules on how far ahead PERs can be issued and how they can be used.

Does Gold Standard allow non-native species?

Gold Standard sets safeguards on species choice, invasive species and monocultures to protect ecosystems. Exotic species are not automatically banned, but projects must justify them and avoid harm. Check the current activity requirements.

Is Gold Standard CCP-Eligible?

Yes. ICVCM lists Gold Standard among CCP-Eligible programmes. A CCP label also requires the specific methodology to be CCP-Approved.
