VM0042 Improved Agricultural Land Management

Updated · 4 min read · By the akar.earth specialist team

VM0042 explained: Verra's improved agricultural land management methodology, active versions v2.1 and v2.2, the v3.0 revision, CCP status and Indonesian fit.

VM0042 is Verra’s methodology for improved agricultural land management (ALM), crediting emission reductions and soil organic carbon removals from changed farming practices. Versions 2.1 and 2.2 are both active, v2.2 is CCP-Approved, and a major revision to v3.0 went through public consultation in early 2026.

What VM0042 covers

VM0042 quantifies emission reductions and soil organic carbon (SOC) removals from practices including:

  • Reduced or no tillage.
  • Improved fertiliser application.
  • Biomass residue management.
  • Water management.
  • Cash crop and cover crop planting and harvesting.
  • Grazing practices.

A single VCS project can combine VM0042 with other methodologies, such as VM0047 for trees, under Verra’s rules.

Version status

VersionStatusKey facts
v1.0Earlier versionClarification released 23 January 2026 for projects registered under v1.0
v2.0ClosingProjects had to request listing before 11 December 2024 and complete validation by 11 March 2026; labelled ‘Not Eligible’ for mitigation outcome labels
v2.1Active since 11 September 2024Label eligibility ‘Reductions and Removals’; separates reductions and removals; Corrections and Clarifications released 10 October 2025
v2.2ActiveCCP-Approved (October 2025); Corrections and Clarifications released 11 June 2026
v3.0Under developmentConsultation 11 February to 31 March 2026 (ID M0264)

According to Verra’s FAQ, v2.1 projects can proceed through validation, registration and verification before a new version is released, and then adapt at crediting-period renewal or baseline reassessment.

The proposed v3.0

The consultation covered VM0042 v2.2 and module VMD0053 v2.1, with a draft Soil Sampling and Analysis Handbook added on 2 March 2026. Proposed changes include:

  • Grouped-project baseline guidance.
  • A cumulative accounting approach.
  • Requirements for repeated measurement and true-up of model predictions.
  • Aligning woody biomass quantification with VM0047 v1.1.
  • Revised grazing requirements aligned with VM0032.
  • Standardised stratification and soil sampling.

Verra said it will submit v3.0 to ICVCM once finalised. Check Verra for the final text and effective date.

Key requirements

  • Practice change from a documented baseline, with evidence at field level.
  • Quantification approach. Measurement, modelling with measured calibration, or defaults, depending on the emission source and version rules. Soil carbon usually needs sampling plus models.
  • Soil sampling with appropriate depth, density and stratification.
  • Additionality and baseline rules set by the methodology and VCS requirements.
  • Leakage for productivity loss and displacement.
  • Non-permanence for SOC removals, through the buffer pool.

How it applies in Indonesia and Southeast Asia

VM0042 was developed mainly around large-scale row-crop and grazing systems. Indonesian smallholder agriculture raises specific issues:

  • Small, fragmented farms. Sampling and monitoring costs per hectare are high. Grouped projects help. See soil carbon for smallholders.
  • Tropical soils. SOC responds differently in warm, wet climates; model calibration for Indonesian soils may be limited.
  • Peat. Agricultural land on peat needs different accounting from mineral soils. Check eligibility and methods carefully.
  • Rice. Rice methane has its own methodologies under several programs. Check whether VM0042 or a rice-specific method fits your practice change.
  • Agroforestry overlap. Adding trees to farms is often better credited under VM0047, possibly combined with VM0042 for soil practices. See the agroforestry hub.
  • Domestic rules. Perpres 110/2025 is the legal anchor; units traded on IDXCarbon must be recorded in SRUK. Agricultural carbon falls under different ministry rules from forestry.

Is VM0042 the right tool for your project?

SituationLikely route
Changing tillage, fertiliser or residue practices on mineral soilsVM0042
Adding trees to farms without land-use changeVM0047 census-based
Rice water managementA rice-specific methodology
Restoring drained peatPeat or wetland methods

Combinations are possible within one VCS project.

For most Indonesian smallholder landscapes, the stronger opportunity is trees on farms rather than soil-only practice change, because tree carbon is easier to measure and verify. Soil practices can still add value within a combined project if sampling budgets allow.

Common pitfalls

  • Under-sampling soil. SOC change is small relative to variability; weak sampling produces large uncertainty deductions.
  • Using an expiring version. v2.0 deadlines have passed.
  • Unverifiable practice data. Farmer self-reports need supporting evidence.
  • Ignoring reversals. Farmers may revert to tillage; plan monitoring and buffer.

Relationship to ICVCM CCP status

VM0042 v2.2 is CCP-Approved, and Verra is CCP-Eligible. v2.1 projects do not automatically carry the label. Verra notes CCP labels require additional project-level conditions checked at verification review. See CCP label and the Gold Standard SOC framework for an alternative.

Frequently asked questions

What is VM0042?

VM0042 is Verra's methodology for improved agricultural land management (ALM). It quantifies emission reductions and soil organic carbon removals from practices such as reduced tillage, better fertiliser use, residue, water and grazing management, and cover crops.

Which versions of VM0042 are active?

VM0042 v2.1 and v2.2 are both active. Verra released Corrections and Clarifications to v2.2 on 11 June 2026 and to v2.1 on 10 October 2025, mandatory for projects on those versions.

Is VM0042 CCP-Approved?

VM0042 v2.2 has been approved by ICVCM as meeting the CCP Assessment Framework (October 2025). Verra notes that CCP labels also require project-level conditions checked at verification.

Is a VM0042 v3.0 coming?

Verra consulted on a major revision, v3.0 (development ID M0264), from 11 February to 31 March 2026. It plans to submit v3.0 to ICVCM once finalised. Check Verra for its release status.
