What is a carbon credit vintage? Definition of vintage year, why older vintages trade at a discount, and how vintage affects Indonesian forest credits.

A vintage is the year in which the emission reduction or removal behind a carbon credit actually occurred. A credit with a 2024 vintage represents a tonne of CO2 equivalent reduced or removed during 2024, even if it was issued in 2026.

Why it matters

Vintage is one of the first attributes buyers filter on. Older vintages often trade at a discount because they were generated under older methodology versions, may predate integrity reforms, and may not fit corporate or regulatory claim rules. Some compliance schemes accept only credits from specific vintage windows. Vintage also helps match credits to a buyer’s reporting year. See our guide to carbon credit pricing.

How it is recorded

When credits are issued, the registry records the vintage as part of each credit’s serial number or batch data. A monitoring period that spans several calendar years is split into vintages in proportion to when the reductions or removals happened. For ARR, that usually means pro-rating tree growth by time; for REDD+, avoided emissions are allocated across years in the period.

Indonesia angle

Indonesian supply includes a large stock of older REDD+ vintages issued before current methodologies such as VM0048. Research shows Southeast Asia had 43 million nature-based credits still available as of April 2025. Some of that stock is older vintages, which affects market pricing. New ARR and jurisdictional REDD+ projects in Indonesia can offer recent vintages under updated methodologies, which some buyers prefer. Domestic units recorded in SRUK also carry vintage information that IDXCarbon buyers use.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing vintage year with issuance year.
  • Buying cheap old vintages for a claim standard that excludes them.
  • Ignoring the methodology version behind a vintage, which matters as much as the year.
  • Allocating a monitoring period’s results to vintages without a clear method.

Frequently asked questions

Is the vintage the year the credit was issued?

No. The vintage is the year the emission reduction or removal took place. Issuance can happen months or years later.

Why do buyers prefer recent vintages?

Recent vintages reflect current methodologies and project conditions, and many claim frameworks and corporate policies restrict how old a credit can be.
