What is IDXCarbon? Indonesia's OJK-supervised carbon exchange, what it trades, its four mechanisms and who can participate, explained in brief.

IDXCarbon is Indonesia’s official carbon exchange, run by the Indonesia Stock Exchange and supervised by the Financial Services Authority (OJK). It trades two kinds of carbon units: PTBAE-PU emission allowances and SPE-GRK emission reduction certificates.

Why it matters

IDXCarbon is the regulated domestic venue for carbon trading under Indonesia’s NEK framework. It gives price discovery, settlement and retirement for national units. For developers, it is one route to market alongside international voluntary sales; for buyers, it offers units that align with national accounting.

How it works

  • Units: PTBAE-PU allowances and SPE-GRK offsets, recorded in the national registry (now SRUK).
  • Four mechanisms: Auction, Regular (Spot) Trading, Negotiated Market and Marketplace. See trading mechanisms.
  • Users: compliance companies, non-compliance companies and project developers. See participation.
  • Rules: governed by POJK 14/2023 as amended by POJK 10/2026, which applies from 6 July 2026.
  • Retirement: SPE-GRK can be retired through the exchange for offset claims; PTBAE-PU surrender for compliance happens outside it.

The exchange launched on 26 September 2023. Reported cumulative volume is more than 1.9 million tCO2e.

Indonesia and Southeast Asia angle

Permenhut 6/2026 and SRUK set clearer paths for forestry and community projects to list units. Developers should compare domestic prices and liquidity against international voluntary markets before choosing a route; see IDXCarbon vs international registries.

Trading volume on IDXCarbon has been modest compared with international voluntary markets, and liquidity varies by unit and mechanism. Prices are visible on the exchange, which helps price discovery for Indonesian units. International buyers registering directly need to provide documents such as a Legal Entity Identifier. Fees, settlement steps and tax treatment should all be checked before a first trade. For forestry developers, the key question is whether domestic prices and demand justify the extra steps compared with selling under an international standard.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Verra or Gold Standard credits can be listed directly.
  • Confusing the exchange with the registry.
  • Ignoring that rules changed in 2026.
