Ex-post: Definition

What does ex-post mean in carbon markets? Credits issued after verified results, why buyers and raters prefer them, and what it means for Indonesia.

Ex-post means “after the event”. In carbon markets, an ex-post credit represents an emission reduction or removal that has already happened, been measured through monitoring and been confirmed by independent verification before issuance.

Why it matters

Ex-post issuance is the main safeguard against selling carbon that never materialises. Major programmes, including Verra, Gold Standard and ART, issue only ex-post credits. Buyers making offset or contribution claims generally need ex-post units, and rating agencies assess ex-post projects on their actual performance.

The quality signal for Indonesia is notable: BeZero has rated 11 ex-post Indonesian projects with an average rating of ‘A’, compared with ‘B’ as the most common rating for nature-based projects elsewhere. See our page on credit ratings agencies.

How ex-post results are produced

  1. The project monitors carbon stocks or emissions during a monitoring period, using plots, remote sensing and activity records.
  2. Results are calculated in a monitoring report, with uncertainty and buffer deductions.
  3. A VVB verifies the report.
  4. The programme issues credits for the verified net amount.

Ex-post results are then compared with ex-ante estimates, and the gap informs future forecasts and contracts.

Indonesia angle

Indonesian credits still trade at a fraction of real abatement cost, partly due to regulatory uncertainty. Ex-post performance data are one of the strongest tools to close that gap, because they show buyers real results rather than promises. For domestic trading, ex-post units must be recorded in SRUK before they can trade on IDXCarbon.

Common mistakes

  • Marketing ex-ante forecasts as if they were ex-post credits.
  • Treating ex-post as automatically high quality; it shows the tonnes were verified, not that the baseline was sound.
  • Ignoring the gap between forecast and verified volumes when renewing offtake contracts.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ex-post carbon credit?

A credit issued for emission reductions or removals that have already happened and have been measured and verified by an independent auditor.

Are all Verra credits ex-post?

Yes. Verra issues VCUs only after verification of monitored results. Ex-ante figures appear in project design documents but are not issued as VCUs.
